Army vs Queen

Real chess

You play White with all sixteen pieces. Black has a king, eight pawns and a queen. Checkmate the black king to win.

This is real chess, so watch out for three things:

  • Your own king: if Black checkmates it, you lose. Castle early and keep it safe.
  • Stalemate: if Black can't move but isn't in check, the game is a draw. Always leave the black king a square until the mating move.
  • Promotion: a pawn that reaches the far side turns into a queen by itself.

We ignore the three-fold repetition rule, so shuffling back and forth won't draw a game you're winning. But 50 moves with no capture or pawn move is a draw!

Stars

  • Silver star: Checkmate the king.
  • Gold star: Checkmate the king 10 times without pressing undo. They don't have to be in a row.

There is a star for each level: easy, medium and hard.

Army vs Queen

You play White with the full set of sixteen pieces. Black has a king, eight pawns and a queen. Checkmate the black king to win. This is real chess with real rules, so castling, en passant and promotion all work, and a pawn that reaches the far side becomes a queen.

The queen can attack two things at once, so after every move ask what she can take. Chase her with pieces that are defended and she has to run.

Three levels: on easy Black moves at random, on medium it usually grabs a piece you leave undefended, and on hard a real chess engine looks a few moves ahead. Win once for a silver star, and ten times without undo for a gold one.
